A Denver artist’s guide to achieving a beautiful wedding makeup look, stress free!

Your BIG Day is coming up! You’re about to marry your best friend and love of your life in front of your families, friends and loved ones. The last few months have been filled with cake testings, dress fittings, catering calls, flower arrangements, venue bookings, etc… The last thing you need is stress on your wedding day. You’ve checked and rechecked all items on your list to make sure everything will run smoothly . Fortunately, your wedding makeup can be crossed off the list of stressful “toss-ups” when handled by an on location makeup artist.

A great makeup artist makes sure you and your bridal party are comfortable and looking flawless. The good news is, you have this list of topics to discuss prior to your wedding that will help you choose the best artist.

  • Budget – How much will it cost?

Ask for a quote that you can sign off on prior to the job starting so there are no surprises. Be certain to discuss if travel fees apply. Are you paying for makeup services for your party? Do you expect each maid to spring for it themselves? Also, keep in mind gratuity is never included in the price. Make sure that the specific green beauty brands are selected and named on your customized bridal face chart.

  • Take a trial run!

Make sure you and your makeup artist are on the same page about how you want to look. Do you have a look in mind? Also, if you have sensitive skin it’s wise to physically test all the products you would like to use at least twice. No red blotchy skin on your wedding day!

  • Set a schedule

Having a makeup artist that is running late or hungover bridesmaids that are late to their time slots can be disastrous. Setting a deadline with your bridal artist which will allow extra minutes for touch ups. A big chunk of “getting ready” time may be taken up by your bridal hair stylist–make sure your makeup artist coordinates with them to make sure everyone’s looks are finished!

  • Get the glow!

Make sure to start your wedding day with fresh skin. Sun exposure, processed or fatty foods and alcohol consumption must be minimized, which can cause dryness, bloating and redness. Schedule a facial a few weeks in advance to get your skin glowing for your special day.

The Day Before Skincare

The day before, we recommend using May Lindstrom Skin: The Youth Dew on your face, which will help balance your skin’s natural oils, heal damaged skin and hydrate even sensitive and more mature complexions. Another key to looking your absolute best is to get a good night sleep. Let your friends do the raging at the rehearsal dinner and save yourself for the big day/night ahead!

As one of the premier artists on wedding makeup Denver has to offer, I have seen brides that have dehydrated their skin pre-wedding, which causes us to overcompensate with other products. The best thing to do is allow us to meet you the morning of your wedding after you’ve showered and start the prep process beginning with hydrating your skin and getting it foundation ready. Jane Iredale’s Primer’s are the first thing we use after your skin is hydrated. We use Absence Oil Control Primer to soothe pores and control oil production. This primer balances the pH of your skin and keeps the rest of the makeup your artist applies intact on those hot summer wedding days in Denver. Jane Iredale’s Smooth Affair Primer are also a great option.

Now that you are all prepped and ready for your look to be created, here are some of our favorite bridal makeup looks:

The Classic Bride

The Classic Bride

This look is the traditional bridal look, a classic lined eye, enhanced lashes, and a pretty pout.

Begin with the eyes. This makes it easy for clean up and a fresh foundation application. Start off by prepping the eyelids with VERT beauty Concealer Pencil. This evens out the eyelid and allows your eyeshadow to stay in place. My favorite colors to use on brides are Jane Iredale’s Pure Pressed Eyeshadows in Allure, Cappuccino, Dusk, and Wink. Apply Allure on the lid with your VERT beauty All Over Shadow Brush.

Next, use your Blending Shadow Brush to blend Cappuccino into the crease using a windshield wiping motion, and smudge along the lower lash line with the Smudge Brush. Add a touch of Dusk for depth at the outer corners of the eye with the Crease Brush. Apply Wink for a highlight just below the brow with the All Over Shadow Brush, and at the inner corners of the eye with the Smudge Brush. Finish off with Jane Iredale’s Jelly Jar in Black using the Vert beauty Fine Liner Brush to create the perfect line just above the lashes. Apply mascara and false lashes.

Clean up any shadow fall before you begin foundation. Apply a half-pea size amount of Jane Iredale’s BB Cream to the back of your hand and use the VERT beauty Face Blending Brush to apply in a circular motion blending into skin.

Once blended, apply concealer to the areas needed. I like to use the VERT beauty Concealer Pencil to conceal dark circles and on top of blemishes. Set the foundation with a light dusting of RMS Un-Powder.

I love using Alima Pure’s Bronzers to add warmth to the skin. Using the VERT beauty Cheek Contour Brush, apply a touch of bronzer below the cheekbones, down the bridge of your nose, around the hairline, and over your chin. Next, apply blush to the apples of your cheeks. Use a blush that is not too dark and not too rosey. Jane Iredale’s Barely Rose is a must have. Add definition to your brows with the Jane Iredale Bitty Brow Kit. You’re probably thinking why do brows after foundation? Well this is just in case you get foundation on your brows.

Finish off your look with the perfect lip. Use a lipliner to line and fill in the lips. This is a great color by itself and you can add a gloss on top for shine. It gives just the right amount of color and shine without getting sticky, perfect for your first kiss as a married couple. As Jessica Alba would say, “Lipstick, like clothing, has become seasonless; matching your own coloring is now the goal.” We can help you choose a color that highlights your natural attributes and makes you stunning!

The Boho-Chic Bride

The Boho-Chic Bride

This look is light and fresh. Apply just a light foundation and concealer, pressing into skin and applying all over the face. Apply the VERT beauty concealer pencil to concealer dark circles and blemishes. Next, apply a touch of Lip2Cheek onto the apples of the cheeks and lips. Our favorites are Promise and Demure. Add bronzer using your fingers, apply sparingly to the cheekbones. You can also use this on the shoulders for a touch of glow, after you have your gown on. Add just a touch of glow with an Illuminator in the color Cosmic Dancer. It adds the perfect amount of golden highlight!

Using your finger, apply RMS Beauty Eye Polish in Magnetic to the lids. Add a touch of Lunar just below the brows and inner corner of the eyes for a subtle highlight. Apply the VERT beauty eyeliner in Bleu to the inner rim of your eyes to make your eyes pop. You can hold your lashes onto the upper lid and fill in the lash line with the liner. Fill in the brows for definition with the Jane Iredale Bitty Brow Kit. Finish the eyes with a sweep of mascara. Finally, to top off the look, apply lip shine in the color “Honest” or Ilia’s lip gloss in The Butterfly & I.

Coming from one of the top artists on wedding makeup Denver has to offer, it is very important to plan ahead for your on location makeup project so there is no day of or day before miscommunication. We hope you enjoyed our guide on bridal makeup and hope to see you on your wedding day looking your absolute best!
