Common mistakes you make when you wash your face

No. 1

Only Cleansing At Night

There is a lot of advice out there about when and how often you should wash your face. Yes, you should ALWAYS cleanse at night to remove makeup, oils, bacteria, and toxins that have built up throughout the day. During the night your skin regenerates and your pH levels return to normal, this is why you should never skip washing your face before bed. What many people don’t realize is that cleansing your face in the morning is an important part of your skin care routine as well.  Washing your face before you start the day removes residue from the products you applied at night. This creates a clean surface to apply the products you use in the morning and gives them the ability to fully absorb into the skin.

Not Too Hot!

More often than not we find ourselves running low on time in the morning and we will do anything to get ready faster. To save time you might wash your face in the shower. This time saver can actually be harmful to your skin and cause unwanted redness and inflammation. The water temperature your use in the shower tends to be hotter than the water you use when washing your face and hands in the sink.  We recommend cleansing your face with luke-warm water after you have showered to prevent any unwanted redness.

Using The Wrong Cleanser

This is a very common mistake that most people are making and don’t even realize it.  For example, foaming cleansers are a popular go to when picking out a face wash but they can actually dry out your skin and strip it of natural oils. It is important to think about your skin type when picking out a cleanser. If you have dry/sensitive skin choose products that will hydrate and moisturize. For oily/combination skin types look for products that help control oil and balance pH.

Pro Tip

AVOID products that have Sodium Lauryl Ether Sulfate or Sodium Laureth Sulfate. This is a foaming agent found in many personal products.  If you enjoy using a foaming cleanser here are a few of our favorites:

Rushing Through Your Routine

Make washing your face a fun ritual! Take the time to double cleanse at night especially after a long day or a fun night out. Double cleansing helps to completely remove all of the build up from the day and purify the skin. We recommend starting with an oil based or cream cleanser to pull out all of those nasty toxins followed by a gentle foaming cleanser. **Oil and cream cleansers should always be applied to dry skin and gently messaged onto your face to allow the oils in the cleanser a chance to breakdown the oils on your face.**

Myth Buster

“Will an oil cleanser clog my pores and cause me to break out?” The answer is NO! Oil cleansers are often misunderstood and tend to receive a bad reputation. Oil based cleansers are a great way to deep clean your pores and hydrate your skin, even for those of us who struggle with oily skin. Oil fights oil and over time will help balance out your skins natural oil production. Here are a few of our recommendations:

Over Exfoliating

Try to avoid using cleansers with micro beads or any kind of foreign objects. Not only are these added exfoliants bad for your skin but they are also harmful for the environment! Instead, choose cleansers that are naturally exfoliating and don’t leave your skin irritated and inflamed. Over time this can lead to uneven skin tone, or dark spots.

Look Out For

When shopping for a facial cleanser, or any product, always scan the ingredients list first. If you are looking for a cleanser that will also exfoliate keep an eye out for products that include fruit enzymes such as pineapple, papaya, and raspberries. These are naturally exfoliating ingredients that won’t strip your skin of it’s natural oils and cause inflammation.

Applying Too Much Pressure

When cleansing with a brush make sure you are not applying too much pressure and avoid using everyday. Similar to over exfoliating, scrubbing your face too much can result in red, irritated skin. Washing your face at the end of the day is a wonderful feeling but you don’t need those harsh brushes and wash clothes to successfully remove impurities. Having the right product and taking the time to thoroughly cleanse works just as well, or even better!

Over Drying

Always, always, always PAT DRY! After cleansing your face and rinsing, gently pat your face with a towel. Do not scrub and be sure to not completely dry your face. Skin should still be moist as you apply the next product in your skin care routine. Products are better absorbed when the skin is still damp. Doing this allows you to get the full benefit out of your toners, serums, and moisturizers.

Pro Tip

After cleansing your face products should be applied from lightest to heaviest. Start with a toner, then move to a serum, and follow with a moisturizer. The last thing you should apply, before makeup, is your organic sunscreen. Just like the seasons, our skin changes too. It is important to pay attention to how your skin is reacting to the weather as well as the products you are using. Don’t be afraid to mix up your products and try new things!
